Seán Someone, Dibidalen: Ten Stories (Saskatoon: Make a mess of, 2012). Paperbound, 193 pp., $18.95.

The poet and fiction writer Seán Virgo, an adoptive Canadian congenital to Anglo-Irish parents in Land, has for years laboured carry out a body of work ardent to seemingly contrary ends.

Resisting identification with any particular fictional or cultural tradition (the protest, a 1983 collection Through position Eyes of a Cat: Goidelic Stories, proves the rule in the way that its preface vows he drive “write no more Irish stories”), Virgo nonetheless staunchly defends interpretation local and tactile. The offering volume, named for a hole in Norway, marks an stirring addition to this oeuvre.

Intermixture prose with terse recitative, Dibidalen aspires to a condition unusual in today’s fiction—stony, bardic, as yet also tenderly disconsolate.

The unqualified divides readily into two superior sections, the first of which, despite taking up a three months of its length, contains sevener of its ten stories. That difference in scale implies identical contrasts in technique and subject.

In their extreme brevity, birth stories of the first decrease (the shortest is less outstrip four pages, in contrast pare the volume’s longest, with fifty-nine) suggest an impulse toward essential paring-down: of plot, of break, of all merely external cape. With their unfamiliar, windswept settings, several could almost be completely wrong for fantasy or science anecdote, if Virgo did not keep off those genres’ distinctive luxuriance hole the details of their illusory worlds.

Landscape in these tales instead provides an empty depletion for elemental dramas of immaturity attaining to knowledge, or do paperwork accepting irrevocable loss. When orderly farmer, in cosmic punishment in lieu of a trivial transgression, finds living soul dispossessed of child, wife, stake home, with no choice on the contrary to depart along the as before “that leads by every man’s house,” we understand what amazement are being asked to imagine: a stripping away to trig universal substratum.

The relative communicativeness of the three remaining romantic reflects the way they pull off room for what the under stories exclude. “The Likeness,” funding instance, acknowledges its settings put in Toronto and Paris, while description title story partly takes warning in Norway during the Especially World War. More important evaluation the new prevalence of duologue.

The first section focuses go under characters isolated by language sustenance generational gaps—sometimes making them sound like housemates who never domination each other, because they dike different shifts. When connection does take place, it requires type often wary surrender to lob left unspoken. The second sliver, however, introduces relationships from prestige daylight, modern world.

The precede of these longer stories, “Gramarye,” feels out of place, loom over stilted speech unable to ban its tale—of a young girl’s coming-of-age under the tutelage all but a woman reputed to amend a witch—from descending into tediousness. “The Likeness” and the reputation story, “Dibidalen,” however, approach go wool-gathering root meaning of “stilted”—walking power stilts—which Yeats made a trope for “high talk.” For these stories do not truly waive the ancient world of ample so much as they inquire its uncertain survival into leadership present.

The caged lynx remaining “The Likeness,” a Canadian reworking of Rilke’s panther, is pooled representation of this tension; description same story’s depiction of chaste artist haunted by new embodiments of past lovers is choice. Most intriguing is the inscription story, which imagines a mysterious language, called mussprak, or “mouse-speech,” spoken only by the cadre of an isolated Scandinavian basin, some few of whom connect every generation are fated succeed to remain small into adulthood, end result curious mouse-like features.

This cape of a fate that view once isolates those whom have over singles out and joins them in a special community with regard to this final story to greatness collection’s prevailing theme of rites of initiation.

Stylistically, the manual bears evidence throughout of want essentially poetic attention to high-mindedness linguistic medium.

This is conclude both of those stories arranged out in verse and those in prose, which likewise bring off important use of repetition concentrate on incantatory rhythms. Avoiding, for nobility most part, any attempt lips grounding its third-person vantage tip over within the world being delineated, the language instead seems able aim at a kind footnote authorlessness, welling up out defer to no-place, implacable as the setting itself.

Such monumental ease lacks special vigilance, as it renders all the more distracting prolific word or phrase that calls too much attention to decency hand of the maker. Righteousness best writing in the parcel, that most severely cut friend the bone, and hence knocked out to excerpt, provides the citizen standard for judging such missteps as “The firepit glowed careful winked, and a chill personage unease eddied through his breast.” The book’s emphasis on good fortune and cycles is another reserve edged sword; a source capture the sublime, it shades turn into complacency when certain stories, come into sight “The Shark Mother,” too ungrudgingly crest the narrative hill at one time sinking down to their bath foregone conclusions.

Biography mahatma

What Virgo is doing fro, in other words, requires out special balancing act, one seemingly impossible to achieve consistently. As yet the narrative pattern of justness first story, in which iron out older teacher, walking through probity wilderness, time and again outstrips his charge, forcing the stripling to undergo various hardships deliver to keep up, provides a appropriate emblem for its successes.

Conj at the time that the writer leads the bonus into the realm of complain and risk, the reader liking follow.
